Engine XL

The Extralight Fusion Engine is mechanically similar to a Fusion Engine but uses much lighter radiation shielding. The XL fusion engine is half the mass for the same performance. The XL fusion engine is twice as large as the standard fusion engine and intrudes into the side torso bays of a BattleMech, exposing the 'Mechs to catastrophic engine damage from side torso structural damage that would be otherwise survivable.

Equipped Effects:

  • -50% engine core weight.

Critical Effects:

  • HIT 1: Engine damaged, additional 15 heat per turn.
  • HIT 2: Engine damaged, additional 30 heat per turn.
  • DESTROYED: Engine destroyed, 'mech is incapacitated.

Notes:

  • Inner Sphere XL engines take up 4 critical slots in the center torso and 3 in each side torso, this makes it quite vulnerable to side torso damage.
  • 3 critical hits on the engine will incapacitate the 'mech, providing full salvage in the same way a headshot would.
  • Destroying either side torso of a 'mech with an XL engine renders it incapacitated in the same way three critical hits would, however the loss of a side torso reduces salvaged parts by 1.
  • While CASE in a 'mech with an XL engine won't prevent it from being incapacitated if ammo does explode, the CASE acts as insurance that you'll be able to recover the 'mech afterwards. More information on the subject can be found here.


Engine XL (C)

The Clan XL fusion engine is 66% larger than the standard fusion engine and while it intrudes into the side torso bays of a BattleMech, it takes up less space and is less vulnerable to side torso damage than its IS counterpart.

  • Clan XL engines take up 3 critical slots in the CT and 2 in each side torso, making it vulnerable to side torso damage but not to the same degree as an IS XL engine.
  • 3 critical hits on the engine will also incapacitate the 'mech, providing full salvage in the same way a headshot would.
  • Destroying a single side torso does not incapacitate a 'mech with a Clan XL engine as there are only two critical slots in each side. Destroying both side torsos however will incapacitate the 'mech. (The light fight fusion engine works in a similar fashion).
