Notes

Modular armor of any type placed in the Torso sections applies its bonus to front torso armor, no benefit is applied to the rear torso armor.

Standard IS Module Armor

Modular Armor was created as a stopgap measure by ComStar engineers. While researching Hardened Armor, the engineers stumbled across an ancient idea: By mounting a special frame on the unit, it could support additional armor protection on a location beyond what the internal frame would normally allow. This provided bonus protection to the carrying unit but at the cost of taking extra weight and being ultimately less effective than a normal ton of armor, though Modular Armor can exceed the normal limits of armor on a 'Mech's frame. Modular Armor proved bulky and makes piloting a mech carrying Modular Armor more difficult (resulting in a -1 penalty to Piloting skill), though this effect does not stack with multiple Modular Armor units equipped to 'mech.

Sanctuary Worlds Modular Armor

The Sanctuary Worlds took an unusual road to developing their BattleMech technology. Due to their low population in the early days, their technology led them down the road of durability and nothing is as emblematic of that mindset then Modular Plating is. Essentially just a series of weight-balanced Ferro-Fibrous armor plates bolted onto a mech's body, Modular Plating provides a modest armor boost in the location it is installed in. There are four ranks of Modular Armor, Mk. 1 through Mk. 4, with Mk. 1 being the lightest and Mk. 4 being the heaviest.
