These instructions assume you have Battletech installed via steam. If you own it via GOG, you could probably add it to steam and launch and then launch it the same way, but I have no way to verify this. They also assume that you access to winecfg and protontricks, these can generally be installed via repositories for your distribution of choice if you don't already have them. Some distributions are even kind enough to prompt you to get them if you try running the commands without them installed.

Enable Proton

  1. In steam settings, make sure that both "Enable steam play for supported titles" and "enable steam play for all other titles" are enabled.
  2. In the steam library, right click Battletech and select "properties...".
  3. In the Battletech properties window, select compatibility, then check "Force the use of a specific Steam Play Compatibility Tool".
  4. From the dropdown, choose an appropriate selection (Proton experimental is a safe choice if you're unsure).
  5. You need to launch Battletech at least once prior to running BTA anyway, so now is a good time to do that. The first launch with proton may take a little extra time, but shortly you should see a standard Battletech screen. Go ahead and close it out.

Install BTA

  1. Right click on Battletech again and go to "Manage > Browse Local Files".
  2. Inside the Battletech folder, create a folder caled "Mods" (case is important in Linux). This is also a good time to note the path of your folder because you'll need it later.
  3. Create a folder someplace you can find it for your Battletech things, for me this is a BTMods folder in my users home: ~/BTMods and download the installer there.
  4. Open a terminal window and cd to the place you saved it and unzip the file.
  5. Run "winecfg", and on the drives tab check the "Show dot files" box, and then click "ok" to close the window.
  6. Run "Wine BTAdvancedLauncher.exe".
  7. In the launcher, click "Advanced Mode".
  8. Under "Install Target" Click "Browse" and navigate to your Battletech Mods folder you created earlier.
  9. Click "Update/Install BTA" Select the options that you want/need and wait for the install to proceed. (note that it is not needed to select linux fire for proton users) This will probably take quite a while if it's your first install.

Inject Modtek

You're almost done! One last minor thing, we need to tell it to inject modtek otherwise you'll get what looks like a regular battletech install that probably doesn't work right.

  1. Close the BTA launcher, and from the terminal run "protontricks --gui".
  2. Select Battletech from the list, and click "OK"
  3. Ignore the warning about 64/32 bit wine prefixes if it comes up, it's not important to what we're doing.
  4. Make sure "Select the default wine prefix" is highlighted and click "OK".
  5. Highlight "Run winecfg" and click "OK"
  6. Go to the "Libraries" tab, and in the box type "winhttp" and then click "add", then click "OK" to close winecfg.
  7. Close the remaining windows, that's it, you're done! If everything went correctly you should now be able to launch Battletech and be welcomed with the modtek loading messages followed by the BTA3062 main menu.
