Description
The Swordsman was an early Federated Suns medium-class BattleMech which was originally built in 2463 as House Davion's third in-house BattleMech design. The design was tainted by heavy use in the Davion Civil War of 2525-2540. Eventually, production ended and the design was relegated to the dustbin of history. However, in the 3060s, the mech was put back into production by House Davion to supplement their forces in the FedCom Civil War. The SWD-2 is the stock production design, mounting heavy armor and firepower for the tonnage: 7.5 tons of armor and a grab-bag mix of guns including an AC/5, LRM-5, SRM-4, two Medium Lasers, and a Small Laser.

Description
In the 3050s, the AFFS went looking for a new light trooper design to shore up their light mech forces. Though the design had been out of production for centuries, the Swordsman was floated as a good fit and was approved by First Prince Victor Davion. Thanks to newly rediscovered Star League technologies, the Swordsman SWD-3 benefits from endo-steel construction and double heat sink cooling. The weapons load is fairly mundane, with a UAC/5 and LRM-10 for long range engagements and a pair of Medium Lasers for close-range combat. CASE protects the mech's 3 tons of ammo. The SWD-3 was a fair success and prompted a handful of upgrades later on.

Description
After the success of the SWD-3, the AFFS commissioned the NAIS to construct a cutting-edge upgrade of the venerable Swordsman that incorporated the latest technology and that would give the Federated Suns the edge over its enemies. The NAIS came back to the military with this, the SWD-4. While it was not as cutting-edge as the AFFS originally desired, it was extremely effective in combat and the AFFS was pleased. The mech proved so effective that it was later put onto the open market and found many buyers among the small government and mercenary markets. Armed with a pair of MML-5s and a Light AC/5 as well as a triplet of ER Medium Lasers, the SWD-4 can engage at any range effectively.
