Engines
Compact Engine
The Compact Fusion Engine (CFE) is mechanically similar to a Fusion Engine but uses much denser radiation shielding. The Compact fusion engine is 50% heavier for the same performance, but occupies less space in the center torso and is less likely to receive a critical hit.

Engine Dense (S)
The Sanctuary Worlds are not without their innovations and though fusion engine technology has long been considered a solved technology by the Inner Sphere the Sanctuary Worlders kept tinkering with it. Eventually, they discovered that by incorporating a heat sink and a heat negator into the engine block and by compacting the reactor they could develop a unique engine that boosted engine power as well as provided some cursory heat management benefits. Naming it the Dense Engine, the Sanctuary Worlders began using it on various combat units to great effect.

Fission Engine
Fission engines are a rarely seen piece of engine technology. Originally the predecessor to the much more widely accepted fusion engine, the fission engine is extremely fuel efficient and relatively inexpensive to both fabricate and operate, making them fairly popular for support vehicles and the occassional IndustrialMech. Compared to fusion however, the fission engine has few advantages and many downsides, such as high doses of dangerous radiation, making them rarely seen on combat units such as BattleMechs.

Fuel Cell Engine
Fuel Cell engines are primarily used in civilian applications like rail systems, personal transport, and IndustrialMechs. Fuel Cell engines generate electrical power that is then used by the vehicle to operate its propulsion system. A Fuel Cell engine has several advantages over the typical Internal Combustion Engine. While they require an oxidizer to operate, they are readily able to accept a stored oxidizer along with their fuel, making it a good choice for submarines, satellites, and naval applications. As most fuel cells run on hydrogen and oxygen, they have no exhaust other than water vapor so Fuel Cells are also used as generators for buildings and other large structures. You cannot use additional Cooling Kits, Exchangers or Heat Banks on a 'Mech with a fuel cell engine.

I.C. Engine
For all intents and purposes identical to a modern internal combustion engine, the I.C.E. in BattleTech is used mainly for conventional vehicles and IndustrialMechs. Its power output is less than a fusion engine of similar mass, meaning an I.C.E. needs to be heavier in order to have the same engine rating of a fusion engine.

Jury-Rigged XL Engine
During the technology revival of the 3050s many technologies were rediscovered and put back into wide production. Among these was the Extra-Light Engine. However, the reactor shielding was complex on the XL and was beyond the capacity of many smaller manufacturers to make. Therefore, this type of engine was created, the so-called Jury-Rigged XL (JRXL). While actually a production model, it is called jury-rigged because it uses extremely bulky but lightweight materials to reproduce the effect of the more advanced and capable standard XL. The Jury-Rigged XL has only one real advantage over its more conventional cousin, which is ease of installation since it was designed to be quickly and cheaply installed.

- HIT 2: Engine damaged, additional 30 heat per turn
- DESTROYED: Engine destroyed, 'mech is incapacitated
Notes:
- JRXL engines take up 4 critical slots in the center torso and 6 in each side torso
- Destroying either side torso of a 'mech with a JRXL engine renders it incapacitated, much in the same way as destroying the CT would, but provides more mech parts to salvage
- While CASE doesn't prevent a 'mech with a JRXL engine from being incapacitated due to losing a side torso, it does stop spill-over damage from the side torso continuing into the CT preventing the 'mech from taking critical damage. More info on this can be found here

Light Engine
The Light Fusion Engine (LFE) is mechanically similar to an XL Engine, but uses Lostech energy shielding to allow a mech to survive the destruction of a side torso. The Light Fusion engine is 75% the mass for the same performance, but intrudes into the side torso bays of a BattleMech.

Notes:
- Light engines take up 4 critical slots in the center torso and 2 in each side torso, this makes it quite somewhat vulnerable to side torso damage
- 3 critical hits on the engine will also incapacitate the 'mech, providing full salvage in the same way a headshot would
- Destroying a single side torso does not incapacitate a 'mech with a Light engine as there are only two critical slots in each side. Destroying both side torsos however will incapacitate the 'mech. (The Clan XL engine works the same way)

Prototype XL Engine
During the technology revival of the 3050s many technologies were rediscovered and put back into wide production. Among these was the Extra-Light Engine. However, the reactor shielding was complex on the XL and was beyond the capacity of many smaller manufacturers to make. Because of this issue, some smaller manufacturers put very early prototype engine designs into production instead due to ease of construction. These prototype XL engines were flawed and created extraneous waste heat, unlike the later perfected models, but were cheaper and easier to produce and install, meaning they found acceptance in Periphery militaries despite these limitations.

XL Engine
The Extralight Fusion Engine is mechanically similar to a Fusion Engine but uses much lighter radiation shielding. The XL fusion engine is half the mass for the same performance. The XL fusion engine is twice as large as the standard fusion engine and intrudes into the side torso bays of a BattleMech, exposing the 'Mechs to catastrophic engine damage from side torso structural damage that would be otherwise survivable.

XL Engine (C)
The Clan XL fusion engine is 66% larger than the standard fusion engine and while it intrudes into the side torso bays of a BattleMech, it takes up less space and is less vulnerable to side torso damage than its IS counterpart.
Manufacturer: | Generic |
---|---|
Tonnage: | 0 |
Critical Slots: | 7 (3 CT + 4 ST) |
Install Location: | Center Torso |
Value: | 2,500,000 |
Gear ID: | emod_engineslots_cxl_center |
Equipped Effects:
- -50% engine core weight
Critical Effects:
- HIT 1: Engine damaged, additional 15 heat per turn
- HIT 2: Engine damaged, additional 30 heat per turn
- DESTROYED: Engine destroyed, 'mech is incapacitated
Notes:
- Clan XL engines take up 3 critical slots in the CT and 2 in each side torso, making it vulnerable to side torso damage but not to the same degree as an IS XL engine
- 3 critical hits on the engine will also incapacitate the 'mech, providing full salvage in the same way a headshot would
- Destroying a single side torso does not incapacitate a 'mech with a Clan XL engine as there are only two critical slots in each side. Destroying both side torsos however will incapacitate the 'mech. (The light fusion engine works in a similar fashion)

XL Engine (S)
The Sanctuary Worlders took Extra-Light Engine technology with them on their great journey out of the Inner Sphere. Over time, their reproductions of the technology changed into this, the Sanctuary XL Engine. More compact than an Inner Sphere XL engine, the Sanctuary XL can withstand more damage than the IS XL can. However, the engine spreads power out somewhat, reducing effective power to the motive systems which reduces the equipped unit's walk speed somewhat.
Manufacturer: | Sanctuary Manufacturing |
---|---|
Tonnage: | 0 |
Critical Slots: | 7 (3 CT + 4 ST) |
Install Location: | Center Torso |
Value: | 1,000,000 |
Gear ID: | emod_engineslots_sxl_center |
Equipped Effects:
- -50% engine core weight
- -10% Walk Speed
Critical Effects:
- HIT 1: Engine damaged, additional 15 heat per turn
- HIT 2: Engine damaged, additional 30 heat per turn
- DESTROYED: Engine destroyed, 'mech is incapacitated
Notes:
- Sanctuary XL engines take up 3 critical slots in the CT and 2 in each side torso, making it vulnerable to side torso damage but not to the same degree as an IS XL engine
- 3 critical hits on the engine will also incapacitate the 'mech, providing full salvage in the same way a headshot would
- Destroying a single side torso does not incapacitate a 'mech with a Sanctuary XL engine as there are only two critical slots in each side. Destroying both side torsos however will incapacitate the 'mech. (The light fusion engine works in a similar fashion)

XXL Engine
The Extra-Extralight Fusion Engine is mechanically similar to a Fusion Engine but uses much lighter radiation shielding. The XXL fusion engine is one third the mass for the same performance, but extrudes into the side torsos of a BattleMech and produces prodigious additional waste heat.
Manufacturer: | Generic |
---|---|
Tonnage: | 0 |
Critical Slots: | 16 (4 CT + 12 ST) |
Install Location: | Center Torso |
Value: | 3,500,000 |
Gear ID: | emod_engineslots_xxl_center |
Equipped Effects:
- -66% engine core weight
- -20 heat sinking per turn
Critical Effects:
- HIT 1: Engine damaged, additional 15 heat per turn
- HIT 2: Engine damaged, additional 30 heat per turn
- DESTROYED: Engine destroyed, 'Mech is incapacitated
Notes:
- Inner Sphere XXL engines take up 4 critical slots in the center torso and 12 in each side torso, this makes it quite incredibly vulnerable to side torso hits and restricts available space in the 'Mech by a lot
- 3 critical hits on the engine will incapacitate the 'Mech, providing full salvage in the same way a headshot would
- Destroying either side torso of a 'Mech with an XXL engine renders it incapacitated in the same way three critical hits would, however the loss of a side torso reduces salvaged parts by 1
- While CASE in a 'Mech with an XXL engine won't prevent it from being incapacitated if ammo does explode, the CASE acts as insurance that you'll be able to recover the 'Mech afterwards. More information on the subject can be found here

Unique Light Engine
The Unique Light Fusion Engine is mechanically similar to an XL Engine, but uses Lostech energy shielding to allow a mech to survive the destruction of a side torso. The Light Fusion engine is 75% the mass for the same performance, but intrudes into the side torso bays of a BattleMech. The Unique Light Engine also comes with attached engine speed enhancements that permit the equipped mech to move faster than normal for its engine size. The Unique Light Engine is Community Content gear.

Engine Cores
Fusion engines are defined by their engine rating. In BTA3062, engine cores are used as replaceable equipment allowing the player to increase or decrease the overall size and power of an engine. The larger the engine core, the faster the 'Mech moves. Note that some 'Mechs are limited to a certain engine core range depending on their size. As an example, a 20t Locust cannot fit anything larger than a 195 core.
For 'Mechs, their maximum walking momentum is directly proportional to engine rating. For instance, a 30-ton Spider BattleMech with a 240 Pitban Fusion Engine is able to generate the same maximum momentum of a 60-ton Merlin with the same engine, but because the Merlin masses twice the Spider, the Spider's maximum velocity is twice that of the Merlin.
All fusion cores require a minimum of 10 heat sinks internally or externally in order for the 'Mech to operate, with extra heat sinks permitted in a 'Mech's potentially in the core itself if it is large enough (see E-Cooling for more information). The 250 core is the minimum sized core that can mount 10 heat sinks internally. Below this size bracket the core can't fit the minimum number of sinks and requires additional heat sinks to be added to the 'Mech (though these extra sinks don't cost any weight, until you go above 10). Cores scale in increments of 25 in regards to their restricted or expanded space available, e.g. a 200 rated engine requires 2 additional heat sinks to be fitted, a 225 engine requires only one, a 250 engine requires no additional heat sinks and a 275 rated engine has space for an additional heat sink that can be added using the E-Cooling +1 gear. The table below details which cores provide space for additional cooling (275 and above) and which require additional heat sinks and how many (245 and below).
